Melina Helm

My name is Melina Helm. I have been able to see through different WINDOWS from early stages of my life on…My dream has always been to COMMUNICATE with people around the world without BARRIERS, without LIMITS, without BORDERS…HEART to HEART….SOUL to SOUL… Now I speak 7 languages and I’m planning to learn more…

Growing up as a bilingual child isn’t always as cool as many people think…You feel DIFFERENT, you are a LOCAL and a STRANGER at the same time…
As a little girl, my HOME was a small town in the Spanish Pyrenees, where my parents -coming from Germany- moved in the late 80s. Mountains, adventure, being outdoors have always been a part of my life… but I often felt as a bird inside a cage, waiting for someone to open the window that would have taken me into the outside world…

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and the Spanish Baccaulareate, Professional Training and Language Teaching (specialized in foreign languages)- Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Official Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

BARCELONA was my BABEL TOWER… just sitting in the train to university, I could listen to an exotic variety of languages…The extraordinary people I met from around the world in this city ignited my passion to learn the many languages of our world… No universal language can bring you as close to a CULTURE and its PEOPLE as the language of its specific community. I wanted to feel the FREEDOM to communicate with real people all over the world.

This WISH for universal understanding motivated me to:

during an Erasmus exchange year in Saarbrücken (Germany)

to learn CATALAN while I was living in Barcelona

and in a small town in the DEEPEST CATALONIA-where Spanish is a foreign language

to learn PORTUGUESE using my self-learn method, 🇵🇹

meeting my dear friends from Lisbon

to start speaking ITALIAN with my Italian flat mates 🇮🇹

after having learnt some random phrases in an Italian travel guide

to rediscover my old FRENCH books before going to Luxemburg as a translator trainee 🇫🇷

at the Directorate General of Translation of the European Commission-where I lived with a French-Luxemburgish family

to get a MEXICAN accent in SPANISH 🇪🇸 🇲🇽

one of my mother tongues -being warmly accepted as a family member at my Mexican friend’s house

to brush up my ENGLISH during the journey of my lifetime down the Australian East Coast,🇬🇧

where I travelled and worked as a volunteer for Woofing Australia and had an amazing Ozzie adventure, surrounded by wonderful people…

Since 2015 I have been living on the beautiful island of Sardinia, where I work as a language specialist and tourist guide

Learning all these languages, I have developed my own learning strategies to achieve my communicative goals

This has enabled me to create my own methods to transmit not only my linguistic knowledge but also my knowledge about “how to learn” to my students, so that they can set their own goals depending on their needs.
